<p><em>"Why should I buy an Android tablet for my mom? Android tablet manufacturers still can&rsquo;t answer that simple question with conviction. So guess which tablet we bought mom for her birthday?"</em></p><p><img src="http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/resizer/thumbs/size/600/wpt/auto/1312395889.usr17748.jpg" style="border: 1px solid #d2d2bb;" /></p><p>It seems that everyday consumers, when given a choice, continue to opt for an iPad/iPad 2 in large numbers. These consumers buy functionality, reliability, and ease of use, and don't make their buying choices based on specs alone. Much of it is great consumer marketing, with Apple's advertising showing many of the things that consumers want.</p><p>And the competitors. Some of early Motorola Xoom advertisements were really sci-fi geek-oriented (will Motorola ever learn?). Samsung's GalaxyTab 10.1 ads revolve around 4G/LTE speed, while the everyday consumer says, huh? And RIM's advertising is (IMHO) horrendous: what, I also need a BlackBerry to see email? HP, on the other hand, seem to understand the consumer market better, displaying ease-of-use and functionality, so I'd suspect that their sales will ultimately reflect this knowledge. And the recent $50 price cut doesn't hurt.</p><p>Android tablet vendors and RIM: Mom is still waiting for you to explain to her why she should buy your product.</p>

Got an iPad, liked a lot of things. Really hated a few things. Bought an Acer Iconia, liked it much better. Asked the non-techie wife if she wanted the iPad after showing her the difference between the two. She preferred the Acer. Ipad getting returned to Target just before the 90 day return period expires. :)

Until she decides she wants an app that someone recommended and it's not available on Android (or at least not one for suitable for the tablet's larger screen) ;) If she doesn't have an existing connection to the iOS ecosystem, she stands a better chance of staying with that tablet.

She's got a Droid phone already so was comfortable with the more complex OS. But what made the sale was the fact that many of the web sites she shops at use flash for one thing or another, making Android the winner.

The iPad has such tremendous mindshare, so initially a lot of people will think of that product if they think about getting a tablet. But the iPad has a powerful advantage when it comes to apps and ecosystem as well: as much as I loathe iTunes, Apple has an ecosystem that offers a LOT of apps, music, and movies. Android simply can't offer things to the same level.
