But it is thwarted fairly easy, since it first requires you to install it and then enter your admin password. Some simple things to do in order to be fairly safe without installing any virus detection programs is to make sure you don't run in admin mode, uncheck the "open safe files after downloading" option in Safari and not be so trusting! You can find out more about this gem at Intego.

If you feel the need (like I do) to ran antivirus and anti-malware software on your Mac, I'd recommend Sophos antivirus. It's free, and it works well. Mostly, it detects windows viruses that my friends accidentally send me in emails, but it keeps me from passing them on. It's never detected a Mac specific virus, though it has detected Malware cookies. I'm pretty careful about installing anything, though, so my chances of acquiring malware in the first place is pretty slim. Still, it's nice to know I have the software there if I need it.

There's also MacScan, which I used for awhile. I didn't like it because it used up to many CPU cycles. Sophos is a lot lighter.

Just my 2 cents.
