As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, or in in the world of PCs, hours of frustration. On the flip side, maybe you have a masochistic desire to destroy your system. What better way to force your hand at upgrading then to render your current rig all but unusable? We don't condone killing hundreds, perhaps thousands of dollars of hardware, but hey, it's your stuff at stake, and how you choose to use (or abuse) it is up to you."</em></p><p><img src="http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/resizer/thumbs/size/600/wpt/auto/1286501946.usr11334.jpg" style="border: #d2d2bb 1px solid;" /></p><p>Having worked on a first line support helpdesk, and now heading up a technical second and third line IT helpdesk I have seen my fair share of broken corporate&nbsp;PC's over the years, the most common&nbsp;being usually liquid spillage in to laptops/PC's&nbsp; or dropped equipment due to carelessness.&nbsp;Occaisionally&nbsp;a user will bring their own home PC's in and ask us&nbsp;if we would mind 'taking a look as it's not working correctly'. In these cases I have seen some bizarre broken PC's from virus and spyware infections, to&nbsp;PC's where the owner has tried to upgrade the memory and have forced&nbsp;the&nbsp;DIMMS in the wrong way, or even in one case had put laptop memory in&nbsp;a PC memory slot.&nbsp; Maximum PC's article covers what they think are 10 best ways you could break your PC and how to prevent them.&nbsp;</p>

Dust, dirt, & general Grime rate high on my list: almost never open a system box without wishing for a Dust Mask! Still vacuum them out - and sometimes even squirt some canned air around the insides - but unless it is a personal machine or a PAYING customer - :D - no longer OBSESS over trying to get the insides squeaky clean: simply point out the DISadvantages of letting things get dirty & leave the details up to the owner.

"User Error" also rates high, although this covers a multitude of sins from not updating, failure to run anti-malware, visiting sites they should know better than visiting, and the occasional "It was doing THIS, so I tried to fix it myself...."
