It appears that the T-Mobile G2 may ship with a hardware rootkit that re-installs the device's firmware upon re-boot, basically stopping those who would want to root and load a custom firmware in their tracks... for now. I'm skeptical that it can't truly be overcome because if so, that would seriously limit the device's appeal - after all, if we can't change the OS, how would official updates actually work? I guess time will tell with this one. All I know is I'm holding off buying one until I know if it's mine to hack as I please, or T-mobile's to control. $500 isn't chump change!</p>
