Part of the reason is that glossy screens have evolved and are somewhat more glare-resistant than the original glossy screens. I thought I'd never want a glossy screen, but after I got my iMac I was hooked. The contrast is great.
Anyway, almost every rev. 1 of Apple products have issues. They've generally gotten better as of late, but Apple's generally aggressive with adopting new technologies, and runs into trouble as a result.
