I know, I feel the same way - I want it to act as a hard drive so I can play music directly off it. This was brought up a few different ways in the Zune meetings, but all we got was some shoulder shrugging in return - they didn't seem to want to tell us why they still weren't allowing the Zune to function as a hard drive. It probably has to do with preserving the Zune experience, but there would be ways to do it (by making it an advanced option that the user would toggle off and on) that wouldn't impact the user experience.
