I'm not in an academic setting, so personally I'd use it to test out new ideas for my company's personalization engine. I'd use the scripting capabilities to build on the fundamental matrix support to model new recommendation approaches.

I'd also take advantage of the great graphing capabilities to help my fiancée's little brother with his math homework. He's just starting high school this year.
