Doesn't the automatic sync also let you specify playlists like it does on WMP 10? You make it sound like you have to do a manual sync everytime you want to change the content on your player and that the automatic sync always only copies your entire media library.
In WMP10, you could set the automatic syncing to update your mobile's media library when specified playlists changed. For example, my JAMin always has the latest 3 episodes of certain TV shows copied over after they are recorded on my Media Center.

And is this shuffle sync relationship that automatically copies random tracks to your mobile device really part of a manual sync relationship?

Well, hopefully the ability to add a shuffle sync playlist and other custom playlists to an automatic syncing relationship is still there. That was a much easier way to manage mobile media content. I can delete tracks in my mobile playlist and they will be automatically removed from the device on it's next sync.
