To answer your questions...I've made a significant investment in software with the purchase of this PPC. The only app I have with autoupdate is SbP Weather. I normally leave WiFi on and just press the off hardware button on the device.
At times it turns on in a matter of a couple minutes (anywhere between 1 and 5) just after I turned it off. If WiFi is left on, it's like the auto-off function of the PDA is ignored and it remains on until the battery almost drains all.
The issue I see is more related to auto turning on than it is related to WiFi. The PDA just turns on on itself (again, ocasionally, like when I went to bed in the middle of a Bust'em game only to wake up couple of minutes after by the background music of the game; PDA turned on again as if the game kept playing even with the PDA off).
It's not like it turns on on itself, say at 3 AM for regular housekeeping.
What I'm doing to avoid this problem is to make sure I turn WiFi off and any other app that might override auto turn off. That way I know that if it turns on couple of minutes after I pressed the off button, it will automatically turn off on itself again. A little annoying, yes and something I had never had to deal with with previous PDAs in the past.
