I've tried several SMS apps over the years, even purchased three of them (SimpleSMS, SMS Manager, and InstantSMS). But before you purchase an SMS app, my two cents' worth is that no 'BT PocketPC/BT Phone' combination will come close to your Treo as an SMS Messaging device. I've never used a Treo myself, but:
1. You have to turn on your PocketPC and launch the app just to send or retrieve SMS messages. Very inconvenient. With SimpleSMS for example, I can't even assign a hardware button to the app because bluetooth should be up and running before launching SimpleSMS. So the drill is: turn on the iPaq, wait for the bluetooth icon on the tray to turn from gray to blue, then launch SimpleSMS. Should be much easier to do on a Treo.
2. The actual sending/retrieving takes longer. Should be faster in the Treo.
3. None of those SMS apps I tried worked 100% of the time with my iPaq 2210. There will always be that occasion when the Ipaq can't connect to the phone to send the message, requiring a soft reset. In my iPaq 2210, that happens after having sent a few messages... meaning everyday. And it's a pain when you have to soft reset AFTER you already composed your message. You lose time, as well as the message.
So until I can afford a converged device, I've gone back to exclusively using the phone for SMS messaging. If I have to compose a long text message, I use a bluetooth keyboard.
