The LCD on the HP is sexier (colors are appreciably more vivid). Also, the metal case of the HP is cooler than the plastic X50/51.

The little extra screen size I like for watching movies, and the batter life is important for that as well, lest you are fond of cliffhangers.

I can't make effective use of the touchpad, but I never made use of the D-pad either so it doesn't bother me. This will be critical to gamers.

X51 has 2x ROM storage, which is nice, and WM5, which is buggy. 4700 wont have a WM5 upgrade til next year. Who really cares? The ROM storage is not a show-stopper for me because I stick data on SD cards much heftier than the additional 128MB, and the existing 85K in HP is quite sufficient for my apps I want always installed and available. With the data on the SD card, it is usually there unless I am watching a movie (I have to switch the card) and then who cares if the data's not there because I am watching the movie!

If they are the same price I would take the 4700 without hesitation. But are they? 'cause the 4700 usually is $100 more than the 50, even used ones on eBay.
