Good points about security. I don't use gmail for anything I necessarily need to keep secure. It's mostly extra storage space. I have other email accounts that I use for logging into and purchasing from retail sites like Amazon, eBay, et al. However, if you think about it, how do you know that using the offical GMail or Hotmail sites are secure? What's to keep a Microsoft or Google employee from reading through your email for passwords, credit card numbers, etc? The only way to be sure is to host your own mail server and secure it yourself.

I don't use any web based service for secure transactions like purchases. They go to a POP server and get deleted when I download, which is usually almost instantly. I don't even want it on my ISP's email backup.
