You can use any of your standard picture file formats (e.g. JPG, BMP, etc.)
The "fading" that you see has always been an oddity but is a mechanism implemented by the OS to make the text on the today screen more legible. That is why it may be more preferential for you to
make your own themes - this way, the picture doesn't appear faded.
