Ed,
On an Audiovox Maestro, simply look for the white battery switch on the bottom of the device (next to the usb port). Push the switch towards the usb port to disconnect the battery.
Once the power goes off you must make sure to push the switch back to its original position or the pda will not be able to recharge.
(Don't ask how I know about that...)
