Considering that a 1 GB CF card is selling for around $175 to $200, $500 for a 1 GB SD card doesn't seem like much of a bargain until you compare the size of the SD card to the CF card.
The SD card is about a third of the size and less than half as thick as the CF card. If the size matters to you, perhaps the "sticker shock" won't faze you.
In six months it'll probably cost $300 and next year it'll be $150.
