I personally haven't had this problem, but I've heard of it happening on a few machines.

Is this on a laptop or a desktop? are you connecting directly to a USB port or via a USB Hub? Do you have a free serial port?

If you are using a HUB, disconnect from the hub and connect directly to the USB port. If you are directly connected to a USB port, try another port. If you've tried all of the USB ports directly and still have the problem, try a serial port. Make sure that the AC Adapter is connected to the cradle, and you have enough power to the device.

You may need to try this on another computer if you still have the problem after trying all of the above.
