One thing to realize is that no thumboard that I know of has a directional pad. Some may have arrow keys laid out like a d-pad, but I doubt those will do diagonals.
If the "configuration" you're talking about deals with that, I doubt most games will have that kind of configuration. They likely expect you to have a d-pad.
You may be better off buying a dedicated gamepad. A :google: search for
ipaq gamepad turned up some hits, including the
BenQ Game Pad and the
Zeta Joypad.
