I am having a similar problem, but in my case I am using 2 iPAQs, P2P ad hoc mode. I am not using access points because I am using them outdoors.
I have also switched my settings to same channel, changed my connection to work settings. but cannot sync. Please help.

If you are using WinXP on your laptop, use the bridging feature between your wired and wireless connection. Then add a local ad-hoc connection profile to your available connections for your wireless card. You may have to explicitly disconnect from your access point and connect to the peer to peer connection instead. |
